Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.

James 5:17

Thought

Several days ago, my daughter and I read the Bible together. We read these couple of verses at the end of the Book of James chapter 5, which are about prayer. From James 5:17, we went on to read Elijah's story in the Book of 1 Kings. We thought about the great power of prayer in particular. There had been no rain in Israel for 3 to 4 years, until Elijah prayed. During the contest at Mount Carmel, Elijah let the Israelites see the great power of God. The prayer was like a miracle. This verse tells us that the powerful prayer came from a man with a nature like ours, not from a man of God. To experience God's great power, James teaches us to pray fervently. Elijah prayed that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. The reason Elijah had a heart to pray fervently was that he had steadfast faith in God's word. In the Book of 1 Kings chapter 17 and 18, the phrase "the word of the Lord came to Elijah" appears quite a few times. No matter whether God asked him to go to a brook to be fed by the ravens, or to live in the house of a widow who had only a handful of flour and a little oil, or to go to see King Ahab, Elijah obeyed God's word without hesitation. No matter under what circumstances, he knew God's voice clearly. His corresponding actions further showed that he had absolute confidence in God's word, and that he was sure following God's word was the best approach. Since Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, we can also experience God's mighty power, like Elijah, through fervent prayer, through loving and obeying God's word.

Prayer

O Lord, forgive us for having little faith in your word, resulting in our often following other voices in our daily lives. We pray that you teach us to understand your word more, through the Spirit of truth. May our souls pant for you as a deer pants for flowing streams. Please give us a heart that prays fervently, and may we live in your love always. Amen.
