I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

2 Timothy 1:5-6

Thought

As a church, we have been studying 1 Timothy and the theme of "Living in God's Household". I have been reflecting on the significance of the words "God's household", and how this could refer to both the church, as well as to my own family. In Timothy's life, it is apparent that he has received significant mentoring and training from not only Paul the apostle, but also from his own immediate family (his mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois). As a father of four boys, this impresses on me the importance and significance of my role in mentoring and disicpling my own children in their spiritual faith. This requires intentionality on my part to regularly look for opportunities to bring the Gospel Truth of Christ's love and grace into our lives and into our daily activities. Along with this, I need to make sure that my own faith and relationship with Christ is active and growing if I am to effectively disicple my own children. In the end though, Paul reminds Timothy that he still has the responsibility to fan into flame this gift from God. Perhaps this is the hardest part of parenting. Once we have done everything we can to teach and disciple our kids, to release control of the results of their faith and eternal destination into the hands of the Lord, while allowing my children to ultimately choose where to place their faith and trust.
Whether you have children or not though, we are all part of God's household in the Church. In this household, we can all still seek out opportunities to invest in and disciple others in their faith. At the same time, we can also be intentional in fanning into flame the gift of faith God has been given to each of us, so that we will always be ready and prepared to fulfill the work God has planned for each of us individually.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for the gift of faith you have given to us. As we grow to be more mature disciples following after you, we pray that you will give us the courage and the willingness to also look for opportunities to disciple others. Place a burden in our hearts of someone who needs encouragement and support in their spiritual journey, and propel us to take action on these burdens. You have a unique and vital purpose for each and every one of us. Help us Lord to listen carefully to your leading, and to rely on you for direction and guidance as we submit obediently to your will. In Christ's name we pray, Amen
